Refining recipes with AI help

When a generated recipe is almost right, change the smallest necessary thing and say which constraints must stay fixed.

What recipe refinement means

Refinement adapts an existing recipe instead of starting from an empty request. MealWise can use the original request, the current recipe and your requested change as context. A successful refinement updates the full result so that ingredients, quantities, cost estimates and steps stay aligned.

In MealWise, refinement and regeneration are Pro features. Refinement is best for preserving the core dish. Regeneration is better when you want a genuinely different meal under the same original constraints.

Use a focused change request

A good request names the change and the boundaries. “Make it better” provides no testable direction. “Make it vegan, keep two servings and stay under €8” tells the system what to change and what not to lose.

Vague requestUseful refinement
Make it healthier.Add more vegetables and reduce the cream, but keep four servings and the 30-minute limit.
Make it cheaper.Keep the dish vegetarian and reduce the estimated total below €7 by replacing the most expensive ingredient.
I do not like this.Keep the chickpeas and tomatoes, remove the spinach and change the flavor profile from spicy to herby.
Use my air fryer.Adapt the cooking method for an air fryer and keep the ingredients and servings unchanged.

Decide what must remain unchanged

Every recipe is a connected system. Changing one ingredient can affect liquid, cooking time, texture, cost and instructions. State the priorities that must survive the edit:

Refine one dimension at a time

Small, ordered changes are easier to judge. First make the recipe dairy-free. Review the result. Then ask for a crispier cooking method if needed. A single instruction that simultaneously changes diet, cuisine, equipment, texture, budget and servings may force trade-offs you did not intend.

Check substitutions as a complete change

An ingredient swap is rarely just a new noun. Replacing cream with a plant-based alternative can change thickness and heat behavior. Replacing meat with beans can change cooking time, seasoning and liquid. After refinement, verify that the new ingredient appears in the steps, the removed ingredient has disappeared everywhere and the quantities still match the serving count.

When to regenerate instead

Use regeneration when the structure of the meal is wrong. If you asked for a quick chickpea dinner and received a curry but now want a crisp handheld meal, repeated refinements may produce an awkward hybrid. A different alternative can preserve the budget, servings and exclusions while rebuilding the dish from the beginning.

Simple rule

Refine to preserve the idea. Regenerate to replace the idea.

Review safety and cost again

A refined recipe is still AI-generated output. Re-check allergens, ingredient labels, cross-contamination risks, safe temperatures, storage guidance and doneness. Cost estimates must also be reviewed because substitutions can change package sizes and local prices. MealWise does not provide live supermarket pricing or medical, nutrition or allergy advice.

A practical refinement sequence

  1. Read the complete original recipe.
  2. Name one outcome that needs to change.
  3. State the constraints that must stay fixed.
  4. Generate the refined version.
  5. Compare ingredients, quantities, cost and steps side by side.
  6. Refine again only if another specific issue remains.

The key idea

AI refinement works best as an explicit editing conversation. Protect the important constraints, request one understandable change and inspect the entire updated recipe before cooking.
