What the app does

• One request instead of a form. Budget, servings, ingredients, diet, exclusions, time and equipment can all be expressed in a single message.
• Cost per serving. Every ingredient gets an estimated price, which adds up to a total and a cost per person in the selected currency.
• Per-serving nutrition on paid plans: calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat for exactly one serving.
• Voice input through Apple's Speech framework, on every plan.
• Local first. Recipes are stored in SwiftData on the device.
• Offline queue. Requests made without a connection are parked and start automatically once the device is back online.
• Home and Lock Screen widgets showing the most recent saved recipe.
• Streaks, a weekly recap and cooking reminders, all handled on the device. Reminders are off by default.
• Refine or regenerate a saved recipe on the Pro plan.

No plan contains advertising. Every plan uses the same recipe model — there is no deliberately weaker model for free users.

The part that took the longest

Ask a language model how many calories a recipe has and the answer comes back systematically low. Measured against USDA reference data, a single-step estimate ran roughly 30 % under.

So MealWise never asks for a recipe total or a per-serving total. It asks for grams, calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat on each individual ingredient, then sums those values server-side and divides by the serving count. On the same recipe with the same model, that lands within 3 %.

Each ingredient then passes physical checks: its macronutrients cannot outweigh the ingredient itself, its energy cannot exceed the 9.2 kcal/g ceiling of pure fat, and a calorie figure that contradicts its own macronutrients by more than 15 % plus 25 kcal is replaced by the Atwater value. If any ingredient lacks usable values, the whole estimate is dropped rather than quietly understating the dish.

Privacy

• Recipes and original requests stay on the device by default.
• Product analytics are consent-gated. Nothing is configured until someone affirmatively agrees in a native dialog naming PostHog (US) and Aptabase (EU). Declining is equally available and consent can be withdrawn in Settings.
• Excluded from analytics entirely: prompts, recipes, text input, email addresses, IP addresses as an event property and account identifiers. No session replay, no autocapture.
• Account deletion is available in the app and requires a fresh emailed confirmation code.

MealWise returns ingredients, steps, estimated prices and the cost per serving. Recipes stay on the device by default. No plan contains advertising.
